NIFT Situation Test April 18, 2008

Gave the NIFT 2008 Situation test on the 13th at NIFT, New Delhi. I made a table lamp cum pen holder. Hmm…I don’t know, I tried some pretty goofy stuff there, not elegant at all, elegance is my thing usually, but with those particular materials that were given – nah! It just wasn’t it. But what’s more important is what the judges are looking for. I will no doubt make it to any one of the centres. It’s not safe to get choosy at the moment.

I wouldn’t like to comment on what anyone else made, but one girl made this ’structure’ that was like ‘coming alive’ as if it would grow three times even as you look at at. Experimentation was sure taken to the limits. I didn’t even have a reserved seat, they had to make arrangements.

I’ve got to admit it, I haven’t understood a thing… What’s NIFT?? xD But that table lamp cum pen holder thing sounds interesting.
Well, whatever it is, and whatever it takes…
GooD LuCK!

2. Ro - April 21, 2008

@Tracy: NIFT is India’s National Institute of Fashion Technology. They have a series of tests every year for fresh intake of aspiring designers. I’m pretty much at a fork in the road where I have to choose between continuing with engineering or living my design dream.
Thanks, will need the luck!

3. akash - June 1, 2008

good effort and best of luck

4. navleen sethi - June 22, 2008

hey rohit plzzz help me yaar i hv selected in written test n nw m hvin situation test on 8 july niift mohali so plzz guide me yaar dat wat gonna happen dere m really tensed yaar

5. Ro - June 23, 2008

@Navleen: Just relax and give it your best. Everything will fall into place soon enough. I was just as tensed as you are right now, and my tension only grew worse after the test, and even worse after the result was declared, and a whole lot worse when the date of counselling was announced. Right now I’m battling confusion over what to take and what not on the day of counselling, it’s really bad.
If your written test went well, then don’t worry about the situation test. If your written test was mediocre, then a good rank is out of reach anyway. So why worry?

Regarding the technicalities of the test, some really cool material, like play dough, ribbon, cardboard, tape, wiring, etc. will be provided to you. Use all or most of it in an imaginative creation of your own. There are no hard and fast rules here, it’s all upto you, which is a good thing. It was fun, but I was worried too. There are lots of other students giving the test, take it easy, it’s not like any other test you’ve given because here you don’t have to cram and vomit. Hope that helps. If you have any more questions, you can send them to me. I’ll try and help :)

6. tushmit chawla - June 27, 2008

hey sir
i have qualified for the situational test pls tell me sumthing about it & how to prepare for it????

13. Ro - March 30, 2009

Ok guys, the situation test is a very basic test. You are given some materials to work with, examples: tape, wiring, straws, paper, cardboard, ribbons, playdough, etc. All you have to do is put these together and make a three dimensional structure based on the given question. It is very easy but your design should be sensible and it should be different and eye-catching. Make sure your structure stands erect and doesn’t easily topple off, so give it a strong base if that is the case. All the best!

14. anjana - March 31, 2009

NOTICE TO ASPIRANTS:

Visit http://www.afdindia.com for the best coaching for Situation Test. Although I myself cleared without any coaching for the Situation Test, but I recommend this to everyone.

Also, Malvika is providing coaching, for details visit blog.malvikajain.com

23. Kapil - April 13, 2009

hey ROhit i have been shortlisted for the situation test how to face it

24. Ro - April 14, 2009

@Kapil: Face it with confidence. If you think you lack in design skills or conceptualisation or simply in using materials then I strongly recommend you take coaching. It’s better to take it than to regret later.
I again remind all the NIFT aspirants that your design should make sense, there should be a reason for everything you put in your design, and not simply because you felt like it.

You should have excellent writing skills so that you can present a substantial write-up about your design. Best of luck!

25. naina - April 14, 2009

27. Ms. V.Saith - April 21, 2009

Hallo Mr. Gadi , i went through your blog n your website too and first of all i want to say that you are a genius of a person! your work is really good…I’m a literature hons. first yr. student at D.U. and have also been shortlisted for sit. test ,so i can’t attend coaching classes and also have my exams going on,s i bought some postal study material, I’m able to use the material in any how so ever manner i want , material handling has never been a problem , the problem lies in the fact that I’m not able to co-relate my ideas n work techniques of the material with the past thirteen yrs’ questions i’ve come across , some how i just become clueless how to juxtapose my idea and the question’s demand together, some how its a miss fit. My perception of development of a 3D design model is : 1. its should have functionality, means it should appear more reasonably legitimate design and if not completely possible then at least it should be close to the real world models & 2. it should have the tinge of fashion in it , that it should not appear completely out of the world or too ordinary a thing to be adjudged, with fashion i also mean it should have both aesthetics’ appeal and a design…(one of your view point i found similar to mine), so what’s your take on this on??? i think the problem lies in the fact that i have studied the field of designs way too practically since my childhood than just depending upon bookish knowledge , blame it on my liberal study environment or just my passion for the subject, I’m familiar with concepts like aerodynamics, acoustic infrastructures, acrobatics(that helps me with human figure modeling), have also done clay modeling, studied civil engineering models and historical architecture and even keen for my own concept car design … I’m scared that i may see my model as covering the realms of the question but it might be grossly misunderstood by the judges, i very well know the fact but i just can’t help it , i cannot come down from my level of work and precision no matter how hard i try and it becomes way too digestible for the judges , so PLEASE help me in the manner that my work does not end up appearing more like a concept development design , rather help me make it appear more like a normal model…need some tips and i don’t mind even if you get critical of me as I’m the biggest critic of myself . you might mistake me so I’d like to tell you that I’m no perfect person and I’m telling you all this in the view point that … its souly my view that the judges out there are very qualified and would certainly won’t like a work that has no scope of improvement left in it , rather giving the impression that the student is well trained, thus rejected and here is where my my effort to constantly improve and make my work best of myself , back fires and fails………so please help me , at the moment I’m utterly confused and lost……..
P.S.: will wait for your earliest reply.

28. Ro - April 22, 2009

@Ms V. Saith: I’d like to make it clear that there’s no such thing as a ‘normal’ model. You should just let the creative juices flow and as long as the model stands self-explained, you’ll have no problems. Your background will not be a hindrance here. Just be sure to enjoy the process of thinking what you’re going to make. Take some time to plan out what you’ll make before you jump in. Take care!

29. charu - April 23, 2009

hiiiiiiiii I just want to know that is their only option is given to build up the model od any thing or more option are given in case of situation test plz rply iam little worried!!!!

30. Ms. V.Saith - April 24, 2009

thank you Mr. R. Gadi , for your valuable advice…

31. Ms. V.Saith - May 23, 2009

Mr.Gadi I’d like to ask you that do you have any inkling , when will the result for NIFT , B.Des program , be announced…???

32. alisha - May 23, 2009

hey i have got 331 rank.can you please tell me what are my chances of getting into nift delhi?????????????????

Ro - May 23, 2009

@Alisha: You will make it but your choices will be limited. That’s good considering that all the design departments at NIFT Delhi are good.

Ro - May 23, 2009

@Ms V Saith: They’re coming one of these days. :-)

33. alisha - May 23, 2009

I am extremely worried.i really want to get into nift delhi.and i really wana do either fashion communication or fashion designing.i have heard that e are allowed to change are stream and centre later, at the end of the first year.is this possible.please help?????????

Ro - May 24, 2009

@Alisha: This is the most difficult question to answer. I do know that some changes are made at the end of 1st year, but there will be others like you who want only FC/FD, so the competition for seats doesn’t end even then. So don’t count on it much. It’s better to get your priorities right. If you can’t leave Delhi because it’s your home, then it’s understandable. Otherwise go the independent way and choose your favorite department elsewhere. I would like to point out to you that LD/TD/KD do have courses in garment making so you will learn the basics of FD there also. AD does not have any courses in garment making, and neither does FC.

34. alisha - May 24, 2009

delhi is my hometown.that’s the reason for my attachment.lets see what happens…..thanks a ton for your advice.you are doing a good job.its real help for students like us.thanks for everything

35. dona - May 25, 2009

hey

i got 285 rank….what chances do i ve in nift delhi?????? n can u please tell me which centre z best after delhi ????

36. Ms. V.Saith - May 26, 2009

hallo! Mr. Gadi , i hv been waitlisted for B.Des and my rank is 861 … what do you think frankly are my chances…and what is the criterion of shortlisting the waitlisted ones??? will wait for your earnest reply…

Ro - May 26, 2009

@Ms V Saith: Honestly, you should wait for the counselling to find out the true picture. All the best!

37. alisha - May 26, 2009

@ms.v.saith i too was wait listed last year my rank was 738.i was called for counselling, but the seats left did not really appeal to me so did not take admission.setas for KD(calcutta), TD(bhopal),FD(shillong)and a few seats in raibarelli and patna were also on offer.but this year the seats have increased this year.best of luck!!!!!!!

38. Ms. V.Saith - May 26, 2009

thank you! infct bth of you…

39. anjali - May 27, 2009

40. alisha - May 27, 2009

heya i got my counselling letter today.my counselling is on 23th june at 9:30am.

41. Ms. V.Saith - May 28, 2009

Sorry Mr. Gadi to bother you again , but I’ve come to know from some reliable sources , that the no. of seats for the general category are 800 for the B.Des course , i don’t have any idea how many students know that…but as far as i have the information the institute keeps 20% of the students in waiting with respect to the no. of availability of seats … that means , at least according to me , around 160 students are there in the waiting list for the general category in addition to the 800 students that would have been short listed. Well , my ranking in the general category as i mentioned before is 861 , so whats your take on this one…..??? Do i still stand a chance ???

Ro - May 28, 2009

@Ms V: You’ll have to wait and see.

@Anjali:So you’ll have plenty of choices.

42. dona - May 28, 2009

hey

which course ve u taken??? if u don mind answering!!!n i ve heard lifes very hard at nift u no all da projects n all…is it that hard??????

43. dona - May 28, 2009

oh n i ve got ma counselling letter…itz on 22nd june……..so u no lk i m curious 2 no whether i ll njoy these 4 yrs ahead or slog!!!!!!!

44. shubhra - May 28, 2009

hello Rohit.
it seems u hv pretty gud idea abouit nift. so, i really wnt u 2 hlp me out.
my rank in nift is 409…… dis ws my 1st attempt.
initially i wsnt serious regardng nift. d simple reason ws my parent’s least interst in it. bt nw i really wnt admissions dere.
bt i’m nt at satisfied wid ma rank. i know nift delhi is out of my hands. i wnt 2 tk FD bt i dnt thnk i’ll gt Chennai or bangaluru even .
cn i opt mumbai, raebarelli or any other cntres???
bcoz evrybdy said dat nift delhi, chennai n bangaluru r gud or 1 cn go 4 mumbai 2 bt all else r nt so gud.
i really wnt gud centres. bcoz i hv qualified b tec in srm n vel tech nd dis is why decission mkng hd gn hrdr 4 me.i wnt a gud career n i hv much interest in nift as compard 2 b tech.
i’m nt gttng a vry positive response regardng nift.
i live in Ranchi n its a smll town. so, i’m nt able 2 gt a vry clear idea regardng nift. so, cn u tll me dat is nift a better option over b tech????
n wht else cntres cn i gt??? wht other branches r gud in designing???
pls do reply as soon as pssble.

45. anjali - May 29, 2009

r u serious that i will b having plenty of choices..
ranking 140 in st category..

46. Ro - May 29, 2009

@Dona: I’m in AD, my rank was 130 in Gen. Life is hard everywhere and NIFT is no exception. At least after your entry to NIFT you’ll be happy you’re part of a fine institute. You will enjoy so long as you’ve got good company and the work-load is under control. Expectations are always at a high in NIFT, so you’ll have to work very hard.
@Shubhra: Hi, you’re case is just like mine. I’m from a science background, and I even tried B.Tech for some time, but didn’t settle for that, so left and came to NIFT. I still miss science sometimes, but that’s a tough decision to make.
What I want to make very clear to all is that just because you’re not in FD doesn’t necessarily mean you won’t get to make garments elsewhere. LD/KD/TD do have garment-making courses and are very competitive departments.
@Anjali: Be patient and wait for the counselling.

47. dona - May 30, 2009

so it all dependz on ur hard work huh!!!! i m sure i ll njoy den……..thnx so much atleast now i m relieved….just a last ques…… vich centre z gud after delhi??? plz if u got ny idea kindly reply. i tried asking many ppl but itz alwayz better 2 hear frm a nift student…..n do u design jewellery in AD?????? i no itz 2 many questions…… but curiosity z alwayz hard 2 resist!!!!

48. shubhra - May 30, 2009

thnks 4 d response. bt i stll hv a lot of confusions drivng my mind.actually LD/KD/TD doesnt appeal 2 me much.knitwear seems really rubbish 2 me, textille means designing d prints n leather…..i dnt wnt it. if said 2 opt 4 sm thng else then i cn go 4 JD. bt there also d same ques- will my rank support dat??? do u thnk i cn gt jd????
ok! tll me do i hv any chances 2 gt fd in bangaluru??? bcoz i really really wnt it. if nt thn wht other preferable cntres cn i gt in fd?? n wht other centres cn b optd in fd dat r gud???

49. ro - May 31, 2009

@Dona: It’s tough to say which centre, because there’s a lot of factors. If you’re not getting a centre close to your home, then I suggest you choose one that’s in a big city like Delhi or Mumbai as you can easily get good quality resources in these places. I’m not fully aware of all the factors so it’s better you ask NIFT itself. I can’t say anything about jewellery-making at this point. Again, best to call-up and ask NIFT faculty in that department.
@Shubhra: I assume that by JD you refer to the JD Institute of Fashion? It’s no use talking about chances until the counselling itself. I’m not aware of what other course/centre is good or ‘good enough’ because NIFT itself has no clear take on this.

50. dona - May 31, 2009

hey thnx for ur help……i guess things r a bit clear now…….u r doin a gr8 job u no free advices n all…nice

hey rohit , cn u plz advise whch is a btr option to choose frm , TD or FD n wat is da diffrnc btwen da 2 fields???

ro - June 16, 2009

@Dona: I can’t believe you want to better understand NIFT?! lol, just kidding. I don’t think I’ll be in AD much longer because I’m changing to LD. It’s not that I’m busy, but I think you should contact NIFT pass-outs in that regard.
@Ms. V Saith: You can find out more about FD, Delhi here: http://blog.malvikajain.com/details-of-fashion-design-nift/ .

65. radz - June 16, 2009

heyy rohit!!! why are you changing your stream?????
well this reminds to ask you are we allowed to change are streams
later on???? like in the second year??????? can you tell me as now you are shifting to leather design do we learn to make shoes and bags also in leather design???????

ro - June 16, 2009

@Radz: Leather combines FD and AD but the medium is mostly leather. Not that they don’t use fabric. It’s just their USP. Yes you can make clothes, shoes, bags, etc.
You can change in second year but you must be lucky enough to find a swap partner or a vacant seat.

66. radz - June 16, 2009

Heyyy thanx a ton… are we like taught step by step shoe and bag making with leather??? we taught to make cloths toooo….but the emphasis is on leather….ohk..to change in the second year is our academic performance of the first year counted?????????

ro - June 16, 2009

@Radz: Not sure if the performance is counted, it’s all about finding a seat, but I’ll be able to answer that by mid-August :P .

67. radz - June 16, 2009

thanx again!!! with you changing your srteam it has given me hope regarding changing the stream….if the seat is vacant in the stream of our choice much before the year ends may be by the 1st semester then can we be assured of changing our centre????????? do we need some contacts with nift people to change pur stream??? do we need recommendations??????

68. anuja - June 16, 2009

with rank 340 can i get nift delhi ??if yes then what stream can i get??

ro - June 16, 2009

@Anuja: Yes, you might get something other than FD/FC.
